2 x Mouzon-Leroux L'Atavique Grand Cru Extra Brut NV
L’Atavique received the coveted ‘Coup de Couer’ award as one of the wines of the year for the prestigious ‘La Revue des Vins de France’ Guide Vert 2018! All fruit sourced from their biodynamic vineyards in the Grand Cru of Verzy. A blend of 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay of which 25% has been vinified in oak . (50% 2016 base wine, with 50% reserves from 2015 & 2014) Brut Nature 0g/litre Lifted aromatics of red fruits, woodsmoke, brioche and spice. The palate is creamily textured, dry yet perfectly balanced, showing a super fine, integrated bead from the slow primary fermentation. The finish is long, complex and possesses a core of minerality. The Montagne des Reims is renowned for the high quality of the Pinot Noir grown throughout. The Grand Cru village of Verzy is unique whereby Pinot Noir is predominant towards the west of the village while to the east, outstanding Chardonnay is also produced. This allows the wines of Verzy to possess signature characters of finesse, balance and richness. This is wonderful introduction to the wines of Mouzon-Leroux. Natural fermentation using indigenous yeasts, malolactic fermentation allowed to limit the use of sulphur, no filtration or fining.
2 x Mouzon-Leroux L'Ascendent Solera Grand Cru Extra Brut MV
The ‘Solera’ system is a perpetual blend where a certain amount is drawn off each year (this instance 50%) and then replaced by the current vintage to refresh. This allows the complexity of aged material to then be refreshed and balanced by the current release. L’Ascendant began with the 2010 release of L’Atavique and has continually evolved since then. If this is the early stages, it is hard to envisage just how amazing this release will become. The Solera system is traditionally used in Spain for the production of the finest sherries, but some of Champagne’s best exponents such as Selosse, Pouillon and Michel have utilised the practice for their most famous cuvée’s. A complex, multi-layered tour de force delivering on every sensory level. The smile on my face from every sip and taste could not be removed. Wine can be a very personal experience and this was my highlight of the year. I was unable to receive an allocation previously as it had all been pre-sold (like all of Mouzon’s wines), now I can’t wait to share this with others. Terroir-driven perfection! 100% Pinot Noir from their biodynamic vineyards in the Grand Cru of Verzy. 50% Vinified in oak barrels and 50% vinified in small vats. All fruit is from the 2016 harvest but not vintage dated. Extra Brut 1.5g/ltr
The pale salmon colour is achieved by a maceration (28 hours) of the juice on the skins. A stunning rosé that is understated at first, which builds on the palate and with every sip leaves you wanting more and more. Layered and complex that unfolds, tantalises and stimulates all of the senses. Lovely mid palate weight, juicy finish and terrific length, with an obvious textural component due to the oak. A wine that creates memories and I look forward to our next encounter!
