About Salmon

                                                                    Salmon1

Winemakers from father to son for three generations, all fruit is exclusively from their own vineyards. From humble beginnings their vision is aimed to the sky in more ways than one... This is Meunier of excellence and worthy of discovery!

Champagne Salmon is situated in the middle of the Ardre Valley in the charming little village of Chaumuzy. A bit off the beaten track and not an area generally frequented by tourists, this is a region of incredible charm and history. Romanesque churches, picturesque villages tucked away amongst green, rolling hillsides that beg exploration... The symbol of the house (displayed as a sculpture in front of the winery and on their labels) is a hot air balloon, as several members of the family are balloon pilots. Once you have visited the area, the thought of jumping into a balloon for a better view is very tempting!

The estate was founded by Michel Salmon and his son Olivier in 1958. However the family’s history as grape growers extends back many generations. Today Olivier and his son Alexandre manage this 10 hectare estate. Both Olivier and Alexandre are balloon pilots uniting their two passions – the balloon and the vines! The region is very much renowned for the excellent quality of their Pinot Meunier and forms the backbone of many of the cuvées, with both a 100% Meunier and a 100% Meunier Rose available. Alexandre is a highly regarded young winemaker and the quality of Salmon’s range is impressive.

When Michel began in 1958 he produced just 500 bottles which he sold going door to door. Today production has expanded but is still quite small at 100,000 bottles. In 2008 Champagne Salmon joined the ‘Club Trésors de Champagne’ (Special Club) and their debut release is from the excellent 2009 vintage, released Oct 2014, of which we were able to secure some stock. Being a prestige cuvée and the pinnacle of what they can achieve, total production was just 3,500 bottles. A piece of history is there for you to try (while stocks last, of course)! Only 10% of their total production is shipped outside of France and this is the first time that these wines have become available in Australia.
